I’ve always felt odd about wishing people a ‘Happy Memorial Day.’ It’s a day of remembrance for United States soldiers who have died, so what’s happy about that? But then I think about what is worth dying for. If we could ask a fallen soldier, their answer might be that it’s worth dying for the kind of freedom that allows us to do what people do on Memorial Day weekend – gather with family and friends to share a meal, run through sprinklers and cartwheel across lawns, clap and cheer at parades.
